Do or Do Not . . . Oh, Hey, Did Someone Say Donuts?
by Steve Mitchell
Well, I haven’t written much about fitness, lately, because I’m honestly not qualified to tell anyone how to do…well, anything.
But, I’ve kept at it. I exercise and eat more healthier foods than not. I practice intermittent fasting. I floss my teeth and, as much as it pains me to think it, I’ve nearly quit cigars.
And I’m into size 34 pants again. I never, ever, thought I’d see the day when I’d fit back into a size 34!
Have I said that in previous posts? I probably have.
Anyhow.
Here’s the thing which has just recently occurred to me. Exercise is necessary, beyond a doubt, and, because of it, I feel stronger and more flexible and more energetic. But, when I see personal improvement in my weight and in my waist size, it’s invariably more the result of diet and less the result of exercise.
And that’s not news – I’ve read it dozens of times. I’ve witnessed it.
And when I say diet, I mean attention to nutrition.
And when I say it’s occurred to me, I mean it’s finally sunk in.
Nutrition is the foundation.
What you eat affects your weight and your body shape and it affects how well you can exercise and what results you get from exercise.
I’ve been trying to build my fitness house from the top down and it’s slow going.
So, that’s where I’m at.
I think I could jump it up a notch. I think I could achieve results I’ve always thought were beyond me.
But, it’ll require a stronger foundation.
I’ve got to research this more.
I’ve got some pondering to do.
Pants? Like pant legs? Like leg sleeves?
Cigars were made for fitness, my friend. Giving up cigars is giving up on fitness. That’s nutrition.
Leg sleeves? What are these leg sleeves you speak of? No man would wear such a thing!
I haven’t quit cigars entirely, oh no! I’m all about the fitness. I’m holding on! I just never get around to smoking them. Maybe tomorrow . . .
Wow … 34. That’s pretty good for an old fart. 🙂
Does this mean that your blood-pressure has gotten better too?
Thank you, Sir! I joke and say I want to work myself up to the level where people say, “Wow, he must’ve been in amazing shape when he was younger, before he let himself go.”
I’m still hovering back and forth between 34 & 36 and can wear either. The size 36 stuff mostly fits on the almost too loose side.
But, more importantly, my blood pressure has gotten better. I’ve quit measuring it every day because it’s held pretty steady since December, but I just checked it again two days ago and it clocked in at a nice 114/71 (the average of three readings taken at one minute intervals).
I’ll take it!
That’s really good news — about the bp. I know you were worried about it, and the diet changes were meant to help. Glad to hear they’re working! Good for you!
Thanks, John. And thank you again for your support. Before your encouragement, the only dietary suggestions concerning bp I’d ever heard were variations on “limit salt intake” and I was certain I’d have to take medication for it the rest of my days.
That’s not to say bp medication isn’t in my future, as I get older. But I’ll delay it as long as possible!
